En 1954, le représentant démocrate James J. Delaney, de New York, a rédigé le premier projet de loi soumis au Congrès des États-Unis interdisant la fabrication et la vente de bascules, ce qui a entraîné une vague de restrictions légales dans le monde et une baisse conséquente de leur popularité. Les couteaux à ouverture assistée, où l'utilisateur doit appliquer une pression manuelle sur la lame pour l'ouvrir, ont en général moins de restrictions légales - ont donc effectivement remplacé la buse en utilisation générale.
