Sa population est d'environ 13 500. Forfar Castle date de l'occupation romaine, et a été détenu par les Picts puis les Anglais, avant d'être capturé par les Écossais et présenté à Robert the Bruce. Forfar a été à la fois une ville marchande traditionnelle et un important centre de fabrication de lin et de jute.
