Gomphose
La gomphose est une articulation qui lie les dents à des douilles osseuses dans l'os maxillaire et la mandibule. La liaison fibreuse entre une dent et sa douille est un ligament parodontal. Plus précisément, la connexion est établie entre le maxillaire ou la mandibule vers le cément de la dent. Le mouvement d'une gomphose est minime, bien qu'un mouvement considérable puisse être réalisé au fil du temps - la base de l'utilisation d'accolades pour réaligner les dents. L'articulation peut être considérée comme une synarthrose. La gomphose est le seul type d'articulation dans lequel un os ne se lie pas à un autre os, car les dents ne sont pas techniquement osseuses. Dans la classification articulaire moderne, plus anatomique, la gomphose est simplement considérée comme une articulation fibreuse car le tissu liant les structures est ligamentaire. Une petite quantité de tissu fibreux maintient les os ensemble. Aucun mouvement n'est possible lors de ces articulations.
