Le gonfalon, le gonfalon ou le "gonfanon" est un type de drapeau héraldique ou de bannière, souvent pointu, appât, ou avec plusieurs flûtes, et suspendu d'une barre transversale d'une manière identique à l'ancien vexillum romain. Il a d'abord été adopté par les communes médiévales italiennes, et plus tard par les Guilds locales, les sociétés et les districts. La différence entre un gonfanon avec de longues queues et une norme est qu'un gonfanon affiche l'appareil sur la zone sans queue, et le standard affiche des badges sur toute la longueur du drapeau. Un gonfalon peut inclure un badge ou des armoiries, ou des ornements de conception chic. Aujourd'hui, toute comune italienne a un gonfalon qui arbore ses armoiries. Le gonfalon a longtemps été utilisé pour les cérémonies ecclésiastiques et les processions. Le «ombrellino» papal, symbole du pape, s'appelle souvent «gonfalone» par les Italiens parce que le parapluie cérémonial du pape était souvent représenté sur la bannière. Gonfalone était à l'origine le nom donné à une réunion de quartier dans la Florence médiévale, chaque quartier ayant son propre drapeau et ses armoiries, ce qui a amené le mot Gonfalone à devenir éventuellement associé au drapeau.
