Hiddenite
Hiddenite est une variété de spodumène vert pâle à émeraude qui est parfois utilisée comme pierre précieuse. Les premiers spécimens de la variété cachée de spodumène ont été récupérés vers 1879 près de la petite colonie de White Plains, à l'ouest de Stony Point, dans le comté d'Alexander, en Caroline du Nord. Selon les récits contemporains, un jeune homme nommé Lackey les a portés à l'attention de J.A.D. Stephenson, un marchand local qui était aussi un ardent collectionneur de minéraux. Au début, on pensait que les huiles jaunes jaunâtre à jaune verdâtre étaient du diopside gemme. Stephenson a apporté la découverte à l'attention du géologue d'exploration William Earl Hidden, qui avait été commandé par Thomas Edison pour rechercher des sources de platine en Caroline du Nord. Des échantillons envoyés par écoute du matériel vert étrange à J. Lawrence Smith, un important chimiste et minéralogiste de Louisville, au Kentucky. Smith a correctement identifié les spécimens comme étant une variété de spodumène, et les a nommés «cachés» en l'honneur d'Hidden. La communauté dans laquelle les pierres précieuses ont été trouvées pour la première fois serait plus tard renommée "Hiddenite". Au cours de la journée de l'extraction cachée dans les années 1880 et 1890, elle était également connue sous le nom de "lithium émeraude".
