Hodoscope
Un hodoscope est un instrument utilisé dans les expériences de physique des particules pour détecter le passage des particules chargées et déterminer leurs trajectoires. Les Hodoscopes se caractérisent par l'existence de nombreux segments; La combinaison de ces segments enregistrent une détection est ensuite utilisée pour déduire où la particule a traversé le dioxode. Le segment de détecteur typique est un matériau scintillant qui émet de la lumière lorsqu'une particule le traverse. La lumière de scintillation peut être convertie en un signal électrique soit par un tube photomultiplicateur, soit par une diode PIN. Si un segment mesure une quantité importante de lumière, l'expérimentateur peut en déduire qu'une particule traversait ce segment. En plus d'informations coordonnées, pour certains systèmes, la force de la lumière peut être proportionnelle à l'énergie déposée. En effectuant les étalonnages nécessaires, l'énergie déposée peut être déterminée, ce qui peut ensuite être utilisé pour inférer des informations sur l'énergie de la particule d'origine. À titre d'exemple: un simple hodoscope pourrait être utilisé pour déterminer où une particule traversait un plan ou un mur. Dans ce cas, l'expérimentateur pourrait utiliser deux segments en forme de bandes, disposés en deux couches.
