Homo habilis est une espèce de la tribu Hominini, qui a vécu d'environ 2,33 à 1,44 million d'années, pendant la période du Pléistocisme gélasien. Bien qu'il y ait eu une controverse savante concernant son placement dans le genre Homo plutôt que le genre Australopithecus, sa taille de cerveau s'est révélée entre 550 cm3 et 687 cm3, plutôt que de 363 cm3 à 600 cm3, comme on l'avait pensé autrefois. Ces résultats plus récents concernant la taille du cerveau favorisent leur placement traditionnel dans le genre Homo, de même que la nécessité pour le genre d'être monophylétique si H. habilis est en effet l'ancêtre commun. Dans son apparence et sa morphologie, H. habilis est le moins apparenté aux humains modernes de toutes les espèces du genre Homo, et sa classification comme Homo a fait l'objet d'un débat controversé depuis sa première proposition dans les années 1960.
