L'honneur est un concept abstrait impliquant une qualité perçue de la dignité et de la respectabilité qui affecte à la fois la situation sociale et l'autoévaluation d'un individu ou d'un corps corporatif comme une famille, une école, un régiment ou une nation. En conséquence, les individus reçoivent une valeur et une stature basés sur l'harmonie de leurs actions avec un code d'honneur spécifique et le code moral de la société en général. L'honneur peut être considéré à la lumière du nativisme psychologique comme étant aussi réel pour la condition humaine que l'amour et dérive également des liens personnels formatifs qui établissent sa dignité et son caractère personnels. Du point de vue du relativisme moral, l'honneur est perçu comme issu de préoccupations universelles pour la situation matérielle et le statut, plutôt que des différences fondamentales de principe entre ceux qui détiennent différents codes d'honneur. Le Dr Samuel Johnson, dans son Dictionnaire de langue anglaise, définit l'honneur comme ayant plusieurs sens, dont le premier était «la noblesse de l'âme, la magnanimité et le mépris de la méchanceté». Ce genre d'honneur découle de la conduite vertueuse perçue et de l'intégrité personnelle de la personne qui lui est dotée.

Honour is an abstract concept entailing a perceived quality of worthiness and respectability that affects both the social standing and the self-evaluation of an individual or corporate body such as a family, school, regiment or nation. Accordingly, individuals are assigned worth and stature based on the harmony of their actions with a specific code of honour, and the moral code of the society at large. Honour can be viewed in the light of Psychological nativism as being as real to the human condition as love, and likewise deriving from the formative personal bonds that establish one's personal dignity and character. From the point of moral relativism, honour is perceived as arising from universal concerns for material circumstance and status, rather than fundamental differences in principle between those who hold different honour codes. Dr Samuel Johnson, in his A Dictionary of the English Language, defined honour as having several senses, the first of which was "nobility of soul, magnanimity, and a scorn of meanness." This sort of honour derives from the perceived virtuous conduct and personal integrity of the person endowed with it.
