En économie, l'hyperinflation se produit lorsqu'un pays connaît des taux d'inflation des prix très élevés et qui accélère généralement l'inflation, dépréciant rapidement la valeur réelle de la monnaie locale et amenant la population à minimiser les avoirs de l'argent local. La population passe habituellement à détenir des devises étrangères relativement stables. Dans de telles conditions, le niveau général des prix au sein d'une économie augmente rapidement car la monnaie officielle perd rapidement sa valeur réelle. La valeur des éléments économiques reste relativement plus stable en termes de devises étrangères. Cependant, les prix relatifs changent au cours de la période hyperinflationniste; Par exemple, les prix alimentaires en Allemagne en 1913-1923 ont augmenté de 43% de moins que ceux des vêtements, alors qu'ils ont augmenté 80 fois plus que les loyers et 24 fois plus que l'indice des prix des actions. Contrairement à l'inflation faible, où le processus de hausse des prix est prolongé et n'est généralement pas perceptible, sauf en étudiant les prix du marché passé, l'hyperinflation voit une augmentation rapide et continue des prix nominaux et de l'offre d'argent et du coût nominal des biens.
