Superpuissance
Une superpuissance est un État avec une position dominante dans les relations internationales et se caractérise par sa capacité inégalée à exercer une influence ou une puissance de projet à l'échelle mondiale. Cela se fait par le moyen de la force militaire et économique, ainsi que de l'influence diplomatique et de la puissance douce. Traditionnellement, les superpuissances sont prééminentes parmi les grandes puissances. Le terme a d'abord été appliqué à l'Empire britannique, aux États-Unis et à l'Union soviétique. Cependant, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la crise de Suez en 1956, le statut de superpuissance de l'Empire britannique a été considérablement diminué; Pendant la guerre froide, les États-Unis et l'Union soviétique sont généralement considérés comme les deux superpuissances restantes, dominant les affaires mondiales. Depuis la fin de la guerre froide et l'effondrement de l'Union soviétique en 1991, seuls les États-Unis d'Amérique semblent remplir les critères d'être une superpuissance mondiale. Alice Lyman Miller définit une superpuissance comme «un pays qui a la capacité de projeter un pouvoir dominant et d'influencer partout dans le monde, et parfois, dans plus d'une région du globe à la fois, et peut donc atteindre de façon plausible le statut de l'hégémonie mondiale .
