La ville d'Imphal (/ ɪmpəl /, Imphal.ogg (help · info)) est la capitale de l'état indien de Manipur. Les ruines du palais de Kangla se trouvent dans le centre-ville, entouré d'un fossé. Le fort de Kangla abritait le paramilitaire Assam Rifles jusqu'en novembre 2004, date à laquelle il a été transféré à l'état de Manipur par le Premier ministre Manmohan Singh. Polo Ground de la ville est le plus ancien parc de polos survivants au monde dans le monde. Près de Polo Ground se trouve le Manipur State Museum, avec une collection d'artefacts et d'images représentant l'histoire de la ville. Ima Keithel (marché maternel) à Khwairamband Bazar est le seul marché au monde avec tous ses stands gérés par des femmes. En 1944, les batailles d'Imphal et de Kohima ont été les tournants de la campagne de Birmanie. Pour la première fois dans le théâtre du sud-est asiatique, les Japonais ont perdu l'initiative des Alliés (qui l'ont retenue jusqu'à la fin de la guerre). Le 18 juin 1997, le district d'Imphal était divisé en Imphal East et Imphal West.
