Levirate mariage
Le mariage de lévirat est un type de mariage dans lequel le frère d'un homme décédé est obligé de se marier avec la veuve de son frère, et la veuve est obligée de se marier avec le frère de son mari décédé. Le mariage de lévirat a été pratiqué par des sociétés dotées d'une forte structure de clan dans laquelle le mariage exogames était interdit. Il a été connu dans de nombreuses sociétés à travers le monde. La pratique est semblable à l'héritage de la veuve, où, par exemple, le parent du défunt peut dicter à qui la veuve peut se marier. Le terme est un dérivé du mot latin levir, qui signifie «frère du mari».
