Le mésenchyme est un type de tissu caractérisé par des cellules peu associées qui manquent de polarité et sont entourées d'une grande matrice extracellulaire. Les cellules mésenchymateuses peuvent se développer dans les tissus des systèmes lymphatique et circulatoire, ainsi que des tissus conjonctifs dans tout le corps, tels que l'os et le cartilage. Un sarcome est un cancer des cellules mésenchymateuses. Le mésenchyme est caractérisé morphologiquement par une matrice de substance au sol proéminente contenant un agrégat lâche de fibrilles réticulaires et de cellules non spécialisées. Les cellules mésenchymateuses peuvent migrer facilement, contrairement aux cellules épithéliales, qui manquent de mobilité et sont organisées en feuilles étroitement adhérentes, et sont polarisées dans une orientation apical-basale.
