Un metroplex est une zone métropolitaine contiguë qui possède plus d'une ville d'ancrage principale d'importance quasi égale. C'est cette importance «presque égale» qui fait que des villes telles que Tokyo, Mexico, New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago et Phoenix ne sont pas des métros, même si elles ont des villes secondaires dans leurs régions métropolitaines.
