En poésie, le terme monody est devenu spécialisé pour se référer à un poème dans lequel une personne se lamente à la mort d'un autre. (Dans le contexte de la littérature grecque ancienne, monody, μονῳδία pourrait simplement se référer à la poésie lyrique chantée par un seul interprète, plutôt que par un chœur.) Dans la musique, monody a deux significations: 1) il est parfois utilisé comme synonyme de monophonie , Une seule ligne solo, en opposition à l'homophonie et à la polyphonie; Et 2) dans l'histoire de la musique, c'est un style vocal solo distingué par une seule ligne mélodique et un accompagnement instrumental.
