Système multipartite
Un système multipartite est un système dans lequel plusieurs partis politiques ont la capacité de prendre le contrôle des bureaux du gouvernement, séparément ou en coalition. Un exemple d'une telle coalition est celui entre l'Union chrétienne-démocrate d'Allemagne et le Parti social-démocrate mis en place après les élections fédérales de 2013. Le nombre effectif de parties dans un système multipartite est généralement supérieur à deux mais inférieur à dix. Dans la grande majorité des systèmes multipartites, de nombreux partis politiques majeurs et mineurs ont de sérieuses chances de recevoir un bureau, et parce qu'ils sont tous en concurrence, la majorité ne peut pas contrôler la législature, ce qui oblige à créer une coalition. Dans certains pays, chaque gouvernement s'est formé depuis son indépendance au moyen d'une coalition. Les systèmes multipartiaux ont tendance à être plus fréquents dans les systèmes parlementaires que dans les systèmes présidentiels et beaucoup plus commun dans les pays qui utilisent une représentation proportionnelle par rapport aux pays qui utilisent les premières élections.
