En informatique, le multitâche est une méthode où plusieurs tâches sont exécutées pendant la même période de temps - elles sont exécutées simultanément au lieu de séquentiellement. Les tâches partagent des ressources de traitement communes, telles qu'une CPU et une mémoire principale. Le multitâche ne signifie pas nécessairement que plusieurs tâches s'exécutent exactement au même instant. En d'autres termes, le multitâche n'implique pas le parallélisme, mais cela signifie que plus d'une tâche peut être à mi-chemin à travers l'exécution en même temps, et plus d'une tâche avance sur une période de temps donnée. Dans le cas d'un ordinateur doté d'une CPU unique, une seule tâche est exécutée à tout moment, ce qui signifie que la CPU exécute activement des instructions pour cette tâche. Le multitâche résout le problème en programmant quelle tâche peut être celle qui fonctionne à un moment donné, et quand une autre tâche d'attente obtient un virage. L'action de réaffecter une CPU d'une tâche à une autre est appelée un changement de contexte. Lorsque les changements de contexte se produisent assez fréquemment, l'illusion du parallélisme est atteinte.
