Peptidoglycan
Le peptidoglycane, également connu sous le nom de mureine, est un polymère constitué de sucres et d'acides aminés qui forme une couche en forme de maille à l'extérieur de la membrane plasmatique de toutes les bactéries, formant la paroi cellulaire. Le composant sucre consiste à alterner les résidus de N-acétylglucosamine et d'acide N-acétylmuramique liés à la β. Attaché à l'acide N-acétylmuramique est une chaîne peptidique de trois à cinq acides aminés. La chaîne peptidique peut être réticulée à la chaîne peptidique d'un autre brin formant la couche 3D en forme de maille. Certains Archaea ont une couche similaire de pseudopeptidoglycane ou de pseudomuréine, où les résidus de sucre sont la N-acétylglucosamine et l'acide N-acétyltalosaminuronique liés à la β. C'est pourquoi la paroi cellulaire d'Archaea est insensible au lysozyme. Le peptidoglycane joue un rôle structurel dans la paroi cellulaire bactérienne, donne une résistance structurale, tout en neutralisant la pression osmotique du cytoplasme. Une idée fausse commune est que le peptidoglycan donne la forme de la cellule; Cependant, alors que le peptidoglycan aide à maintenir la résistance structurelle de la cellule, c'est en fait la protéine MreB qui facilite la forme de la cellule.
