Phycobiline
Les phycobilines (du grec: φύκος (phykos) signifiant "alga" et du latin: bilis signifiant "bile") sont des bilanes capturant la lumière dans les cyanobactéries et dans les chloroplastes d'algues rouges, de glaucophytes et de certaines cryptomonades (mais pas dans les algues vertes Et les plantes). La plupart de leurs molécules se composent d'un chromophore qui les rend colorées. Ils sont uniques parmi les pigments photosynthétiques en ce sens qu'ils sont liés à certaines protéines hydrosolubles, connues sous le nom de phycobiliprotéines. Les phycobiliprotéines passent ensuite l'énergie lumineuse aux chlorophylles pour la photosynthèse. Les phycobilines sont particulièrement efficaces pour absorber les lumières rouge, orange, jaune et verte, longueurs d'ondes qui ne sont pas bien absorbées par la chlorophylle a. Les organismes qui poussent dans les eaux peu profondes ont tendance à contenir des phycobilines capables de capturer la lumière jaune / rouge, tandis que celles qui sont plus profondément contiennent souvent plus de phycobilines capables de capturer le feu vert, ce qui est relativement plus abondant là-bas. Les phycobilines fluorescent à une longueur d'onde particulière, et sont donc souvent utilisées dans la recherche comme marqueurs chimiques, par exemple en liant les phycobiliprotéines aux anticorps dans une technique appelée immunofluorescence.
