Physionomie
La physiognomie est l'évaluation du caractère ou de la personnalité d'une personne à partir de son apparence extérieure, en particulier du visage. Le terme peut également se référer à l'apparence générale d'une personne, d'un objet ou d'un terrain, sans tenir compte de ses caractéristiques implicites, comme dans la physionomie d'une communauté végétale. La crédibilité d'une telle étude a varié de temps en temps. La pratique a été bien acceptée par les anciens philosophes grecs, mais est tombée dans le discrédit au moyen âge par les vagabonds et les mountebanks. Il a ensuite été relancé et popularisé par Johann Kaspar Lavater avant de revenir à nouveau à la fin du 19ème siècle. La physionomie telle qu'elle a été comprise dans le passé répond à la définition contemporaine d'une pseudoscience. Aucune preuve claire n'indique des travaux de physionomie, bien que des études récentes aient suggéré que les apparences faciales «contiennent un noyau de vérité» à propos de la personnalité d'une personne. La physiognomie est parfois appelée anthroposcopie, bien que l'expression soit plus fréquente au 19ème siècle à l'origine du mot.
