Un marché de plaidoyer est un accord dans une affaire pénale entre le procureur et le défendeur selon lequel le défendeur s'engage à plaider coupable à une accusation particulière en contrepartie d'une concession du procureur. Cela peut signifier que le défendeur plaide coupable à une accusation moins grave, ou à l'un des nombreux frais, en contrepartie du licenciement d'autres accusations; Ou cela peut signifier que le défendeur se déclarera coupable à l'accusation pénale initiale en contrepartie d'une peine plus indulgente. For example, in the U.S. legal system, a criminal defendant charged with a felony theft charge, the conviction of which would require imprisonment in state prison, may be offered the opportunity to plead guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge, which may not carry a custodial sentence.
