Poly est un thermoplastique transparent souvent utilisé comme une alternative légère ou résistant aux éclats au verre. Bien qu'il ne s'agisse pas techniquement d'un type de verre, la substance a parfois été appelée verre acrylique. Chimiquement, c'est le polymère synthétique du méthacrylate de méthyle. Le matériel a été développé en 1928 dans plusieurs laboratoires différents par de nombreux chimistes tels que William Chalmers, Otto Röhm et Walter Bauer et a été commercialisé en 1933 par la Rohm and Haas Company sous la marque Plexiglas. Il a depuis été vendu sous de nombreux noms différents, y compris Acrylite, Lucite et Perspex. Le PMMA est une alternative économique au polycarbonate lorsque la résistance extrême n'est pas nécessaire. En outre, PMMA ne contient pas les sous-unités bisphénol-A potentiellement nocives trouvées dans le polycarbonate. Il est souvent préféré en raison de ses propriétés modérées, de sa manipulation et de son traitement simples, et peu coûteux. Le PMMA non modifié se comporte de manière fragile lorsqu'il est chargé, en particulier sous une force d'impact, et est plus enclin à se gratter que le verre inorganique conventionnel, mais le PMMA modifié peut atteindre une résistance élevée aux rayures et aux chocs.
