Polynésie
La Polynésie est une sous-région de l'Océanie, composée de plus de 1 000 îles dispersées sur l'océan Pacifique central et méridional. Les indigènes qui habitent les îles de la Polynésie sont appelés Polynésiens et ils partagent de nombreux traits similaires, y compris le langage, la culture et les croyances. Historiquement, ils étaient des marins expérimentés et utilisaient des étoiles pour naviguer pendant la nuit. Le terme «Polynésie» a d'abord été utilisé en 1756 par l'écrivain français Charles de Brosses et a été appliqué à l'origine dans toutes les îles du Pacifique. En 1831, Jules Dumont d'Urville a proposé une restriction à son utilisation lors d'une conférence à la Société Géographique de Paris.
