En philosophie, la potentialité et l'actualité sont des principes d'une dichotomie qu'Aristote a utilisé pour analyser le mouvement, la causalité, l'éthique et la physiologie dans sa Physique, sa Métaphysique, son Ethique et son Anima. Le concept de potentialité, dans ce contexte, se réfère généralement à toute "possibilité" qu'une chose puisse être considérée comme ayant. Aristote ne considérait pas toutes les possibilités de la même manière, et a souligné l'importance de ceux qui deviennent réels de leur propre gré lorsque les conditions sont correctes et que rien ne les arrête. La réalité, contrairement à la potentialité, est le mouvement, le changement ou l'activité qui représente un exercice ou une réalisation d'une possibilité, lorsqu'une possibilité devient réelle au sens le plus complet. Ces concepts, sous des formes modifiées, sont restés très importants dans le moyen âge, influençant le développement de la théologie médiévale de plusieurs façons. Plus loin dans les temps modernes, alors que la compréhension de la nature impliquée par la dichotomie a perdu de l'importance, la terminologie a trouvé de nouvelles utilisations, se développant indirectement de l'ancienne. Ceci est plus évident dans des mots comme «énergie» et «dynamique», mais aussi dans des exemples tels que le concept biologique d'une «entelechie».
