Prophase
Prophase, de l'ancien grec πρό et φάσις, est une étape de la mitose dans laquelle la chromatine se condense en deux structures en forme de tige appelées chromosomes dans lesquelles la chromatine devient visible. Ce processus, appelé condensation de la chromatine, est impliqué dans le complexe de condensine. Puisque le matériel génétique a été répliqué dans l'interphase antérieure du cycle cellulaire, il existe deux copies identiques de chaque chromosome dans la cellule. Ces copies sont appelées chromatides sœurs et elles sont attachées l'une à l'autre à un élément ADN présent sur chaque chromosome appelé centromère. Aussi pendant la prophase, la coloration au giemsa peut être appliquée pour provoquer une bande de G dans les chromosomes. Une organelle importante dans la mitose est le centrosome, le centre d'organisation des microtubules dans les métazoaires. Pendant la prophase, les deux centresomes, qui se reproduisent indépendamment de la mitose, ont augmenté leur activité de microtubule en raison du recrutement de γ-tubuline. Les centrosomes seront repoussés aux extrémités opposées du noyau cellulaire par l'action des moteurs moléculaires agissant sur les microtubules. Fondamentalement, la chromatine dans le noyau serpente en chromosomes.
