La réadaptation professionnelle ou le recyclage professionnel est le processus d'apprentissage d'une nouvelle compétence ou d'un commerce, souvent en réponse à une modification de l'environnement économique. En général, il reflète les changements de profession plutôt que le mouvement "ascendant" dans le même domaine. La nécessité de recycler les travailleurs est souvent censée s'appliquer aux membres plus âgés de la main-d'œuvre, dont beaucoup ont vu leurs professions disparaître et leurs compétences perdent de la valeur à mesure que la technologie, l'externalisation et une économie faible se combinent pour éroder leur capacité à gagner leur vie. Alors que les Américains plus âgés ne font pas face à un taux de chômage aussi élevé que les adolescents et les jeunes adultes du pays, alors qu'ils se retrouvent au chômage, ils restent sans emploi pour plus de deux fois plus longtemps que les adolescents. Alors que le stéréotype des besoins de recyclage est le travailleur plus âgé, les jeunes aux États-Unis et à travers la Communauté européenne et l'Afrique souffrent du même problème. L'écart entre les compétences qu'ils possèdent et ceux que les employeurs cherchent activement est important et stagne à leurs perspectives d'emploi. Actuellement aux États-Unis, la psychologie, l'histoire et les arts du spectacle représentent 22% des diplômes universitaires obtenus.
