Riyad est la capitale et la plus grande ville d'Arabie Saoudite. C'est aussi la capitale de la province de Riyad, et appartient aux régions historiques de Najd et Al-Yamama. Il est situé au centre de la péninsule arabique sur un grand plateau et abrite 5 254 560 personnes et le centre urbain d'une région d'environ 7 millions de personnes. La ville est divisée en 15 communes, gérées par la municipalité de Riyad, dirigée par le maire de Riyad et l'Autorité de développement de Riyad, présidée par le gouverneur de la province de Riyad, Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud. Le maire actuel de Riyad est Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman Al Mogbel, nommé en 2012. Riyad a la plus grande université féminine au monde, l'Université Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman. Il a été désigné comme Beta World City.
