Rootkit
Un rootkit est un type de logiciel furtif, généralement malveillant, conçu pour cacher l'existence de certains processus ou programmes à partir de méthodes de détection normales et permettre un accès privilégié continu à un ordinateur. Le terme "rootkit" est une concaténation de "root" (le nom traditionnel du compte privilégié sur les systèmes d'exploitation Unix) et le mot "kit" (qui se réfère aux composants logiciels implémentant l'outil). Le terme "rootkit" a des connotations négatives grâce à son association avec les logiciels malveillants. L'installation de Rootkit peut être automatisée ou un attaquant peut l'installer une fois qu'il a obtenu l'accès root ou administrateur. L'obtention de cet accès est le résultat d'une attaque directe sur un système (c'est-à-dire en exploitant une vulnérabilité connue (comme une escalade de privilège) ou un mot de passe (obtenu par craquage ou ingénierie sociale)). Une fois installé, il est possible de cacher l'intrusion ainsi que de maintenir un accès privilégié. La clé est l'accès racine ou administrateur. Le contrôle total sur un système signifie que les logiciels existants peuvent être modifiés, y compris les logiciels qui pourraient autrement être utilisés pour le détecter ou le contourner.
