En 2011, la population de Halton était de 127 500, et seule celle de Runcorn était de 61 000. La ville se trouve sur la rive sud de la rivière Mersey, où l'estuaire se rétrécit pour former Runcorn Gap. Directement au nord de la Mersey se trouve la ville de Widnes. En amont et à 8 milles au nord-est, la ville de Warrington et en aval de 16 milles à l'ouest est la ville de Liverpool. La gare de Runcorn se trouve sur une branche de la ligne principale de la côte ouest. Il fournit des services fréquents à Londres, Liverpool et Birmingham. La route A533 traverse la ville depuis le sud, en traversant l'écart du runcorn sur le pont du jubilé d'argent, le pont le plus bas de la rivière Mersey.
