Rayon Schwarzschild
Le rayon de Schwarzschild est le rayon d'une sphère telle que, si toute la masse d'un objet est comprimée dans cette sphère, la vitesse d'échappement de la surface de la sphère équivaut à la vitesse de la lumière. Un exemple d'objet plus petit que son rayon Schwarzschild est un trou noir. Une fois qu'un résidu stellaire s'effondre au-dessous de ce rayon, la lumière ne peut pas s'échapper et l'objet n'est plus directement visible. C'est un rayon caractéristique associé à chaque quantité de masse. Le rayon de Schwarzschild s'appelait l'astronome allemand Karl Schwarzschild qui a calculé cette solution exacte pour la théorie de la relativité générale en 1916.
