En informatique, une bibliothèque est une collection d'implémentations de comportement, écrite en termes de langue, qui a une interface bien définie par laquelle le comportement est invoqué. Cela signifie que tant qu'un programme de niveau supérieur utilise une bibliothèque pour effectuer des appels système, il n'est pas nécessaire de le réécrire pour implémenter ces appels système encore et encore. En outre, le comportement est prévu pour être réutilisé par plusieurs programmes indépendants. Un programme invoque le comportement fourni par la bibliothèque via un mécanisme de la langue. Par exemple, dans un langage impératif simple tel que C, le comportement dans une bibliothèque est invoqué en utilisant l'appel de fonction normal de C. Ce qui distingue l'appel comme étant d'une bibliothèque, par rapport à une autre fonction dans le même programme, est la manière dont le code est organisé dans le système. Le code de la bibliothèque est organisé de telle sorte qu'il peut être utilisé par plusieurs programmes qui n'ont aucune connexion entre eux, tandis que le code qui fait partie d'un programme est organisé pour être utilisé uniquement dans ce programme. Cette distinction peut acquérir une notion hiérarchique lorsqu'un programme grandit, comme un programme multi-million de lignes.
