Les pétrels des tempêtes sont des oiseaux de mer dans la famille Hydrobatidae, partie de l'ordre des Procellariiformes. Ces plus petits oiseaux marins se nourrissent de crustacés planctoniques et de petits poissons prélevés à partir de la surface, généralement en planant. Leur vol est flottant et parfois bataille. Les pétrels des tempêtes ont une distribution cosmopolite, dans tous les océans. Ils sont strictement pélagiques, ne tombent que sur le terrain lors de l'élevage. Dans le cas de la plupart des espèces, on connaît peu leur comportement et leur distribution en mer, où ils peuvent être difficiles à trouver et plus difficile à identifier. Ce sont des nésters coloniaux, qui affichent une forte philopatrie dans leurs colonies natales et leurs sites de nidification. La plupart des espèces nichent dans les crevasses ou les terriers et toutes les espèces sauf une fréquentent les colonies de reproduction nocturnes. Les couples forment des liaisons monogames à long terme et partagent les tâches d'incubation et d'alimentation des poussins. Comme beaucoup d'espèces d'oiseaux de mer, la nidification est très prolongée avec une incubation prenant jusqu'à 50 jours et à partir de 70 jours après. Plusieurs espèces de pétrels de tempête sont menacées par des activités humaines.

Storm petrels are seabirds in the family Hydrobatidae, part of the order Procellariiformes. These smallest of seabirds feed on planktonic crustaceans and small fish picked from the surface, typically while hovering. Their flight is fluttering and sometimes bat-like. Storm petrels have a cosmopolitan distribution, being found in all oceans. They are strictly pelagic, coming to land only when breeding. In the case of most species, little is known of their behaviour and distribution at sea, where they can be hard to find and harder to identify. They are colonial nesters, displaying strong philopatry to their natal colonies and nesting sites. Most species nest in crevices or burrows and all but one species attend the breeding colonies nocturnally. Pairs form long-term monogamous bonds and share incubation and chick feeding duties. Like many species of seabird, nesting is highly protracted with incubation taking up to 50 days and fledging another 70 days after that. Several species of storm petrel are threatened by human activities.
