Les tiges sont des oiseaux de mer dans la famille des Sternidae qui ont une distribution mondiale et se trouvent normalement à proximité de la mer, des rivières ou des zones humides. Auparavant considéré comme une sous-famille des goélands, les Laridae, ils reçoivent généralement un statut familial complet et sont divisés en onze genres. Ce sont des oiseaux minces et légèrement construits avec de longues queues fourchues, des ailes étroites, des factures longues et des jambes relativement courtes. Leur vol est dynamique et gracieux. La plupart des espèces sont gris pâle au-dessus et blanches ci-dessous, avec une coiffe noire contrastante à la tête, mais les marais, l'Inca et les noddies ont un plumage sombre pendant au moins une partie de l'année. Les sexes sont identiques en apparence, mais les jeunes oiseaux se distinguent facilement des adultes. Les tiges ont un plumage non reproducteur, qui implique généralement un front blanc et un capuchon noir très réduit. Les sternes sont des oiseaux d'habitats ouverts qui se reproduisent généralement dans des colonies bruyantes et déposent leurs œufs sur un sol nu avec peu ou pas de matériel de nid. Cependant, les marmottes construisent des nids flottants de la végétation dans leurs habitats humides, et quelques espèces créent des nids simples dans les arbres, sur les falaises ou dans les crevasses.
