Thales of Miletus (/ θeɪliːz /; Grec: Θαλῆς (ὁ Μιλήσιος), Thalēs; c. 624 - vers 546 av. J.-C.) était un philosophe grec pré-socratique de Milet en Asie Mineure et l'un des Sept Sages de Grèce. Beaucoup, surtout Aristote, le considèrent comme le premier philosophe de la tradition grecque. Aristote a rapporté l'hypothèse de Thales sur la nature de la matière - que le principe de la nature était une substance matérielle unique: l'eau. Selon Bertrand Russell, «la philosophie occidentale commence avec Thales». Thales a tenté d'expliquer les phénomènes naturels sans référence à la mythologie et a été extrêmement influent à cet égard. Presque tous les autres philosophes pré-socratiques le suivent en essayant de fournir une explication de la substance ultime, du changement et de l'existence du monde sans référence à la mythologie. Ces philosophes ont également été influents et, finalement, le rejet par Thales des explications mythologiques est devenu une idée essentielle de la révolution scientifique.
