Towpath
Un chemin de halage est une route ou un sentier sur la rive d'une rivière, d'un canal ou d'une autre voie navigable intérieure. Le but d'un chemin de halage est de permettre à un véhicule terrestre, des bêtes de fardeau ou à une équipe d'extracteurs humains de remorquer un bateau, souvent une péniche. Ce mode de transport était courant où la voile n'était pas pratique en raison des tunnels et des ponts, des vents défavorables ou de l'étroitesse du canal. Après la révolution industrielle, le remorquage est devenu obsolète lorsque les moteurs ont été installés sur les bateaux et lorsque le transport ferroviaire a remplacé la méthode de remorquage lente. Depuis lors, beaucoup de ces chemins de halage ont été transformés en pistes polyvalentes. Ils sont encore appelés chemins de halage - bien qu'ils ne soient utilisés que de façon occasionnelle dans le but de remorquer des bateaux.
