Transsexualisme
Le transsexualisme est lorsqu'un individu s'identifie avec un genre incohérent ou non culturellement associé à leur sexe assigné, c'est-à-dire dans lequel le sexe assigné d'une personne à la naissance entre en conflit avec son genre psychologique. Un diagnostic médical peut être effectué si une personne éprouve un malaise en raison du désir d'être membre du genre opposé, ou si une personne subit des troubles de fonctionnement ou de détresse à la suite de cette identification de genre. Le transsexualisme est stigmatisé dans de nombreuses régions du monde, mais il est devenu plus connu dans la culture occidentale au milieu de la fin du XXe siècle, en même temps que la révolution sexuelle et le développement de la chirurgie de réaffectation sexuelle. La violence, la discrimination ou les attitudes négatives envers le transsexualisme accompagnent souvent certaines croyances religieuses ou valeurs culturelles. Dans la culture populaire, le transsexualisme est souvent mal confondu avec la performance de traînée et le cross-dressing. Il existe des cultures qui n'ont aucune difficulté à intégrer les personnes qui changent les rôles de genre, les tenant souvent en grande estime. Certains soutiennent que les transsexuels défendent le rôle traditionnel des personnes «Deux-Esprit» trouvées chez certaines tribus autochtones américaines.
