En cristallographie, le système de cristaux trigonaux est l'un des sept systèmes cristallins, et le réseau en chaîne rhomboédrique est l'un des sept réseaux en réseau. Ils sont souvent confondus les uns avec les autres: les cristaux dans le système de réseau rhomboédrique sont toujours dans le système de cristaux trigonaux, mais certains cristaux tels que le quartz sont dans le système de cristaux trigonaux mais pas dans le système de réseau rhomboédrique. Le système de réseau rhomboédrique se compose du réseau rhomboédrique, tandis que le système de cristaux trigonaux se compose des cinq groupes de points des sept groupes spatiaux avec un réseau rhomboédrique. Il existe 25 groupes spatiaux dont les groupes de points sont l'un des cinq dans le système de cristaux trigonaux, composé des sept groupes spatiaux associés au système de réseau rhomboédrique avec 18 des 45 groupes spatiaux associés au réseau hexagonal. Le groupe de points trigonaux décrit la symétrie d'un objet produit en étirant un cube le long de la diagonale du corps. Le réseau Bravais rhomboédrique résultant est généré par trois vecteurs primitifs de même longueur qui font des angles égaux l'un avec l'autre.
