La fièvre typhoïde
La fièvre typhoïde - également connue simplement comme la typhoïde - est une maladie bactérienne mondiale commune transmise par l'ingestion de nourriture ou d'eau contaminée par les excréments d'une personne infectée, qui contient la bactérie Salmonella enterica enterica, sérovar Typhi. La maladie a reçu divers noms, tels que la fièvre gastrique, la fièvre entérique, le typhus abdominale, la fièvre récente infantile, la fièvre lente, la fièvre nerveuse et la fièvre pythogène. Le terme «typhoïde» signifie «ressemblant au typhus» et provient des symptômes neuropsychiatriques communs à la typhoïde et au typhus. Malgré cette similitude de leurs noms, la fièvre typhoïde et le typhus sont des maladies distinctes et sont causés par différentes espèces de bactéries. L'apparition de cette maladie a fortement diminué dans le monde développé avec l'essor des techniques d'assainissement du 20e siècle et des antibiotiques.
