Requin baleine
Le requin-baleine est un filtre à eau à mouvement lent et les plus grandes espèces de poissons existantes connues. Le plus grand individu confirmé avait une longueur de 12,65 m et un poids de plus de 21,5 tonnes métriques, et des rapports non confirmés de requins baleine considérablement plus importants existent. Les réclamations d'individus de plus de 14 m de long et pesant au moins 30 mt ne sont pas rares. Le requin baleine détient de nombreux enregistrements pour la taille pure dans le règne animal, en particulier étant de loin le plus grand vertébré non maitre vivant, rivalisant avec beaucoup de plus grands dinosaures en poids. C'est le seul membre du genre Rhincodon et la famille, Rhincodontidae, qui appartient à la sous-classe Elasmobranchii dans la classe Chondrichthyes. Les espèces sont originaires d'environ 60 millions d'années. Le requin baleine se trouve dans les océans tropicaux et chauds et vit en pleine mer, avec une durée de vie d'environ 70 ans. Les requins baleines ont de très grandes bouches, et comme alimentateurs de filtres, ils se nourrissent principalement de plancton. Le programme de la BBC Planet Earth a filmé un requin baleine se nourrissant d'une école de petits poissons.
