Le terme worm / wɜrm / est utilisé dans la langue de tous les jours pour décrire de nombreux animaux éloignés différents qui ont généralement un long corps cylindrique en forme de tube et pas de jambes. Les vers peuvent varier de taille microscopique à plus d'un mètre de longueur pour les vers polychaïdes marins, 6,7 mètres pour le vers de terre géant africain, Microchaetus et 55 mètres pour le ver némérine marin, Lineus longissimus. Différents types de vers occupent une petite variété de niches parasites, vivant à l'intérieur des corps d'autres animaux. Les espèces de vers sans vie peuvent vivre sur terre, dans des environnements marins ou d'eau douce, ou sur le terrier. En biologie, «ver» se réfère à un taxon obsolète utilisé par Carolus Linnaeus et Jean-Baptiste Lamarck pour tous les animaux invertébrés non-arthropodes et dérive du vieux mot anglais wyrm. La plupart des animaux appelés «vers» sont des invertébrés, mais le terme est également utilisé pour les caeciliens amphibiens et le ver lent à Anguis, un lézard creusé sans patte.
