Clean est un poisson téléostéen bentpelagous de la famille des cyprinidés, répandu dans les eaux courantes des régions montagneuses et basses d'Europe et d'Asie Mineure. Le nettoyeur préfère les rivières de taille moyenne, se sent bien dans l'eau claire et froide, avec un fond sableux, rocheux ou argileux, en évitant le bruissement. Il se rencontre également dans les lacs. Il vit solitaire ou en petits groupes. La longueur habituelle de 25-30 cm, maximum 90 cm; poids normal 200 g, maximum 8 kg. Elle peut vivre pendant 22 ans. Il a un corps allongé, légèrement comprimé latéralement, épais, presque cylindrique, recouvert de grandes écailles épaisses et persistantes. Retour large, arrondi. Tête petite, épaisse et large, aplatie sur le dessus. Front large et lisse. Fond subconique. La grande bouche à lèvres minces est un terminal, très légèrement oblique, avec des mâchoires de longueur égale. La ligne latérale légèrement incurvée. La nageoire dorsale commence un peu après l'insertion de la nageoire ventrale, elle a la base courte, le bord tronqué ou légèrement arrondi. La nage anale commence avec la nageoire dorsale; son bord est arrondi au sommet.
