I lombrichi chiamati anche nematodi o elks, sono una specie molto ricca del regno animale. Ad oggi, sono state descritte più di 20.000 specie diverse. Sono probabilmente anche il gruppo più individuale tra gli animali multicellulari, una stima che rappresentano circa l'81% di tutti gli organismi animali. Questi sono per lo più piccoli vermi da bianco a incolori, filiformi, che vivono in media umida, inclusi molti gruppi parassiti con alcune specie patogene umane.
