Un asterisco è un simbolo tipografico o glifo. È così chiamato perché assomiglia ad un'immagine convenzionale di una stella. Gli scienziati di computer e i matematici spesso lo chiamano una stella, o, più informalmente, splat. In inglese, un asterisco è di solito a cinque punte a caratteri sans-serif, a sei punte a caratteri serif e sei o otto a punta scritta a mano. Può essere usato per censurare le parole di giuramento e il testo volgare o sbagliato. Viene anche usato su internet per correggere l'ortografia, in questo caso compare prima o dopo la parola corretta.
