Burkina Faso, noto anche per il suo nome a breve termine, Burkina, è un paese senza sbocco in Africa dell'Africa occidentale, di circa 274.200 chilometri quadrati di dimensione. È circondato da sei paesi: il Mali a nord; Niger ad est; Benin a sud-est; Togo e Ghana a sud; E Costa d'Avorio a sud-ovest. La sua capitale è Ouagadougou. Nel 2010 la sua popolazione è stata stimata a poco meno di 15,75 milioni. Precedentemente chiamata la Repubblica dell'alto Volta, il paese è stato rinominato il "Burkina Faso" il 4 agosto 1984 dal presidente Thomas Sankara, usando una parola di ciascuna delle due principali lingue madri del paese, Mòoré e Dioula. Figurativamente, il Burkina, da Mòoré, può essere tradotto come "uomini di integrità", mentre Faso significa "patria" a Dioula.
