Una Chantry è un fondo di fiducia monetaria istituito allo scopo di impiegare uno o più sacerdoti per cantare un determinato numero di Messe durante un periodo di tempo determinato per il bene spirituale di una persona defunta, in generale il donatore, sperata di essere nello stato di Purgatorio. I cantieri furono comunemente stabiliti in Inghilterra prima della Riforma e furono dotati di terre, affitti e altri beni donati dai donatori, spesso nelle loro volontà, il reddito da cui manteneva il sacerdote della chiesa. Una cappella chantry è un edificio su terreno privato o in una zona dedicata all'interno di una chiesa parrocchiale o di una cattedrale, posta a parte o costruita appositamente e dedicata all'esecuzione dei doveri di carriera del sacerdote. Una chantra può occupare come premessa solo un altare, ad esempio nella navata laterale di una chiesa, piuttosto che una cappella chiusa all'interno di una chiesa più grande, generalmente dedicata al santo preferito del donatore. Molti di questi altari di chantry divennero ricchi, spesso con arredi d'oro e vestiti preziosi.
