Una cometa è un piccolo corpo solare del sistema solare che, passando vicino al Sole, si riscalda e inizia ad uscire, mostrando un'atmosfera visibile o coma, e talvolta anche una coda. Questi fenomeni sono dovuti agli effetti della radiazione solare e del vento solare sul nucleo della cometa. I nuclei Comet vanno da poche centinaia di metri fino a decine di chilometri e sono composti da collezioni sciolte di ghiaccio, polvere e piccole particelle rocciose. Il coma e la coda sono molto più grandi, e se si può vedere abbastanza brillante dalla Terra senza l'aiuto di un telescopio. Le comete sono state osservate e registrate sin dai tempi antichi da molte culture diverse. Cometi hanno una vasta gamma di periodi orbitali, che vanno da diversi anni a diversi milioni di anni. Comete di breve periodo provengono dalla cintura di Kuiper o dal relativo disco disperso che si trovano oltre l'orbita di Nettuno. Si pensa che le comete di più epoca nascano nella nuvola Oort, una nube sferica di corpi gelidi che si estendono dall'esterno della Cintura di Kuiper a metà strada alla prossima stella più vicina.
