Il didattismo è una filosofia che sottolinea le qualità didattiche e informative della letteratura e di altri tipi di arte. Il termine ha origine nella parola antica greca διδακτικός, "relativa all'educazione e all'insegnamento", e significa imparare in modo affascinante e intrigante. L'arte didattica era intesa sia per intrattenere che per istruire. Per esempio, i giochi didattici erano destinati a trasmettere al pubblico un tema morale o un'altra ricca verità. Un esempio di scrittura didattica è un saggio sulla critica di Alexander Pope, che offre una serie di consigli su critici e critiche. Un esempio di didattismo nella musica è il canto Ut queant laxis, che fu usato da Guido di Arezzo per insegnare sillabe di solfege. Intorno al XIX secolo il termine didattico venne usato anche come critica per un lavoro che sembra essere eccessivamente carico di informazioni istruttive, di fatto o altrimenti educative, a scapito del piacere del lettore. Edgar Allan Poe ha anche definito didatticismo il peggiore di "eresie" nel suo saggio Il Principio Poetico.
