Etimologia
L'etimologia è lo studio della storia delle parole, delle loro origini e come la loro forma e il loro significato sono cambiate nel tempo. Con un'estensione, il termine "etimologia di" indica l'origine della parola particolare. Per le lingue con una lunga storia scritta, i etimologi usano testi in queste lingue e testi sulle lingue per raccogliere le conoscenze su come le parole sono state usate nei periodi precedenti della loro storia e quando hanno inserito le lingue in questione. Gli etimologi applicano anche i metodi della linguistica comparata per ricostruire informazioni sulle lingue troppo vecchie per qualsiasi informazione diretta disponibile. Analizzando le lingue correlate con una tecnica nota come metodo comparativo, i linguisti possono trarre inferenze circa il loro linguaggio parentale condiviso e il suo vocabolario. In questo modo sono state trovate radici di parola che possono essere tracciate fino all'origine di, ad esempio, la famiglia di lingue indoeuropea. Anche se la ricerca etimologica è cresciuta originariamente dalla tradizione filologica, attualmente si svolge una ricerca etimologica su famiglie linguistiche dove non è disponibile una piccola documentazione o una documentazione precoce, come Uralic e Austronesian.
