Gnathostomata / ˌneɪθɵstoʊmɑːtə / sono i vertebrati mignolati. Il termine deriva dal greco γνάθος "mascella" + στόμα "bocca". La diversità di Gnathostome comprende circa 60.000 specie, che rappresentano il 99% di tutti i vertebrati vivi. Oltre alle mascelle opposte, i gnathostomi viventi hanno anche denti, appendici accoppiati e un canale semicircolare orizzontale dell'orecchio interno, insieme a caratteri anatomici fisiologici e cellulari come le guaine di mielina dei neuroni. Un altro è un sistema immunitario adattativo che utilizza la ricombinazione di VJ per creare siti di riconoscimento dell'antigene, anziché utilizzare ricombinazione genetica nel gene del recettore del linfociti variabile. Nuovi reperti fossili suggeriscono i thelodonts come i parenti più vicini della Gnathostomata. Si ritiene che le ganasce si siano evolute da archi di supporto anteriore di gabbia che avevano acquisito un nuovo ruolo, essendo modificati per pompare l'acqua sulle griglie aprendo e chiudendo la bocca in modo più efficace - il meccanismo della pompa buccale. La bocca potrebbe poi crescere più grande e più ampia, rendendo possibile catturare prede più grandi. Questo meccanismo stretto e aperto sarebbe con il tempo diventato più forte e più duro, trasformandosi in mascelle reali.
