Il gonfalone, il gonfalone o il "gonfanon" è un tipo di bandiera araldica o bandiera, spesso punta, con la rondine, o con diversi streamer e sospesa da una traversa in modo identico all'antico vexillum romano. È stato adottato per la prima volta dai comuni medievali italiani e, successivamente, dalle corporazioni locali e dai distretti. La differenza tra un gonfanon con code lunghe e uno standard è che un gonfanon visualizza il dispositivo sulla zona non a coda e le visualizzazioni standard visualizzano il distintivo lungo tutta la lunghezza della bandiera. Un gonfalone può includere un badge o uno stemma, o ornamenti di design fantasia. Oggi ogni comune italiano ha un gonfalone che sportiva il suo stemma. Il gonfalone è da tempo utilizzato per cerimonie e processioni ecclesiastiche. L'ombrellino papale, simbolo del papa, è spesso erroneamente chiamato "gonfalone" dagli italiani perché l'ombrello cerimoniale del papa è stato spesso descritto sul banner. Gonfalone è stato originariamente il nome dato ad una riunione di quartiere nella Firenze medievale, ogni quartiere con la propria bandiera e stemma, portando alla parola Gonfalone alla fine associandosi alla bandiera.
